A lot of the early history of NASCAR revolves around Atlanta. The area produced some real drivers from the men running moonshine during the Prohibition years.

One of the most famous was Roy Hall, otherwise known as Rapid Roy. This is who Jim Croce was singing about in his song “Rapid Roy the Stock Car Boy”. Roy won three stock car championships in 1939, 1941 and 1945.

Lloyd Seay was Roy Hall’s cousin and once won 3 races in two weeks in 1941. He was later shot by another cousin over a moonshine dispute about charging sugar to that cousin’s account at the store.

Another of Roy Hall’s cousins was Raymond Parks, who owned the cars that both men drove and also the cars that won the first two NASCAR championships. He was also a driver in his own right and one of the founders of NASCAR.

Bill Elliot is probably the most popular driver from Atlanta. Elliot was voted Most Popular Driver 16 times. He won 44 races and a Winston Cup, and holds the qualifying records at both Talladega and Daytona.
